The Democratic Alliance managed to maintain its foothold in three of the four wards in the Western Cape by-elections held on Wednesday.
According to results made available by the Independent Electoral Commission’s regional office in the Western Cape on Thursday morning crucial wards in Gansbaai and Grabouw were regained by the DA. The ward in Sandbaai was regained uncontested.
The ANC managed to win again in Zwelihle, Hermanus, after facing the EFF for the first time in this region.
The EFF’s candidate Samuel Nywebeni made little impact in Ward 5 (Zwelihle) and only managed to attract 199 (11.9%)votes. This ward was won by the ANC’s Sicelo Gxamesi, receiving 1 406 votes ( 88.1%).
Lydia Matomele of the DA won Ward 11 (Grabouw) with 1 292 (55.05%) votes. A total of 1 036 votes (44.14%) went to Enrico Oosthuizen of the ANC and Simbongile Majelo of the United Democratic Movement received only 19 (0.81%) votes.
Ward 2 (Gansbaai) was won by Riana de Coning of the DA. She received 1 475 (74.95%) of the votes as opposed to 493 (25.05%) for Juan Lewis of the ANC.
Ward 7 (Sandbaai) was uncontested. David Botha of the DA was the only candidate nominated.
