Marine Dynamics Shark Tours

As we were dealing with low tides this morning we launched from Gansbaai harbour at 8am. We made our way towards danger point and spotted a Southern Right Whale swimming towards Walker Bay. We stopped to see if it would come up again but unfortunately it went for a dive.

It was a very calm morning, even as we went around danger point there was not a lot of swell. We made our way to Shark Alley and had a look at the Cape Fur Seals before we anchored at Wilfred’s Klip. There were a few other boats out, spread amongst the different dive sites. Some of the boats were towing decoys, as was Lwazi our research boat. After 20 minutes at our dive site we spotted our first shark that was 2.6m in length. It came up briefly but was shortly after followed by Clampy, a 4.2m female we have been seeing every now and then the last few days. Another small shark showed up with some bite marks on the right flank close to the Caudal fin but we weren’t able to tell if it was a new shark or if it was the first shark we spotted. If you see a shark passing the cage with its left flank facing you and it comes back after 5 minutes with the right flank facing you it can be difficult to tell if it is a new shark or the one you saw 5 minutes ago, unless they have very distinctive features.

During the Shark Cage Diving we spotted another whale swimming around Wilfred’s Klip. It came up a few times and was around for quite some time. We ended up seeing at least 5 different sharks and perhaps even 6!

Location:  Wilfred’s Klip
Water Temperature: 14.9C
Depth: 21.0m
Visibility: 5m
Number of Sharks: 6
Conditions: A calm day with plenty of sunshine
