Grootbos Research Team Assessing Invasive Regrowth

Grootbos Foundation's research team was conducting an assessment of invasive plant regrowth in the region this afternoon. These markings on these trees caught their attention...what do you think made these marks? You can leave an emoji of your guess.

Assessing invasive plant regrowth is an important part of reserve management and fire management plans. Just as fynbos thrives after fire and leaps into living colour with the first rains that fall on the nutrient-rich soils, so do invasive plants. There is a window of opportunity which creates jobs for locals, protects the natural biodiversity of natural landscapes and also contributes towards protecting humans, homes and livelihoods from future fire seasons - invasive plant clearing projects! Developing a plan and map of the areas where invasive plants are shooting is an important first step before teams of local women can be deployed.

This is Gladiolus overbergensis which caught their eye in the field too, just as it catches the eye of bird and insect pollinators.
Image 2
This scarlet beauty is Gladiolus guthriei. These beautiful bulbs burst into flower with the winter rains and if invasive plants are not cleared from the wild landscape, the risk is that they outcompete and overcrowd beauties like this.
