Our Love Affair with Winter

Our Love Affair with Winter

Xplorio

Welcoming the month of June always brings special meaning to us all. We have reached the half-way mark of another year, June school holidays are around the corners and this year we welcome the frosty touch of Winter. Like a cold-hearted prince, Winter has swept us off our feet by showering us with bouquets of hail and sonnets of thunder.

Although Winter is a persistent suitor, we accept his gifts, because along with it comes the promise of the show of a lifetime. The early days of June still offers up the occasional spectacular sunset and opens the stage for the arrival of our dearly missed Southern Right Whales and larger than life Great White Shark females.

Winter time in the Overberg is known as Whale Watching Season to its inhabitants. Scores of Southern Right males and females travel thousands of kilometres to grace the waters of Walker Bay with their graceful presence. The first few opportunistic males have been spotted in the area along with a number of Humpback Whales and dolphins. These mammoth mammals travel here to the warmer waters of Southern Africa to mate, calve and put on a show to onlookers like no other.

On the opposite side of Gansbaai, the waters close to Geyser and Dyer Islands have also slowly been showing signs of larger life. Winter is the opportune time for Shark Cage Diving in Gansbaai as the visibility is exceptionally better and this is the time when the Kings of the Ocean give way to their quite sizeable Queens.

These incredible creatures of the deep can be views from the cliffs of De Kelders, from a scenic flight across the Bay or taking a step on the wild side with one of our Shark Cage Diving operators.

Thus, as we take a look back at the cold courtship we find ourselves in with Winter, a warm glow captures our hearts as we remember... The beautiful colours painted across our skies at sunset, the unusual gift of snow-like hail covering our world in a white blanket and the return of the awe-inspiring marine mammals that make this area so unique. And we have to admit... we are in love with Winter!
