Sandbaai was once a wind-swept sandy area overgrown with the alien Port Jackson trees. Today it is probably the most densely populated suburb of Hermanus. Dozens of housing complexes provide affordable housing to the younger generation working in Hermanus and the older generation who are down-sizing and need to be close to facilities. The older section of Sandbaai is pure suburbia with the convenient corner café, general store, hairdressers and estate agents and a few small, independent schools.
The seafront is commandeered by some stylish guest houses and holiday homes and the public is able to walk along a coastal pathway to enjoy the views over the rocky coast. Several parking areas allow swimmers and divers access to the gullies, kelp forests and the beach where swimming is safe within the natural rock pools.
Access to the central business district and industrial areas of Hermanus is much better now with improved road works. There are some excellent facilities in Sandbaai that include a big community hall where events and gatherings are held, a well-stocked Agri-co-operative, a nursery and old age homes.
