When is the Best Time to Paint Your House in the Overberg?

The Overberg’s weather can be beautiful, but it’s not always kind to houses.

One day, everything looks fine, and the next, you notice faded walls, peeling paint, rust marks, mould, muddy splashes, or those questionable streaks from that time a flock of hadedas flew over your roof. What your house needs is a fresh coat of paint!

So, it’s time to plan your next home maintenance project. But with paint prices climbing and so many things competing for your attention, like work, gym, and braaiing, it’s easy to keep putting it off. For inspiration, we approached Kent Georgala, engineer and project manager at Omega Consulting Africa (OCA), for expert advice.

We Asked Kent Georgala of Omega Consulting Africa for Advice

We’ve had some great Q&As with Kent in 2025, and this, our first one for 2026, promises to be just as educational.

Kent shares his top tips on when and how to paint your home so it not only looks immaculate but also stands up to the Overberg’s elements for years to come.

So before you pick up a brush, check out Kent’s answers to nine common painting dilemmas.

Kent Answers 9 Questions Every Homeowner Asks About Painting

Let’s get started:

Q1: Why does timing matter when painting a house?

Kent: Paint isn’t just about giving your house a quick facelift. It’s your first line of defence against the weather. If you paint at the wrong time, your fresh coat could peel, crack, or fade faster than you can say “touch-up.”

Too hot, and the paint dries before it can stick properly. Too cold or damp, and it might not dry at all. Picking the right time gives your paint a fighting chance to do its job and saves you from endless frustration later.

Q2: What’s the best time of year to paint in the Overberg?

Kent: Definitely late summer to early autumn. So that’s roughly late February to April. Temperatures are comfortable, humidity is lower, and there aren’t too many windy or rainy days. Basically, it’s the sweet spot for painting outside.

Q3: Are there weather conditions I should avoid when painting?

Kent: Avoid the extremes. Blazing hot, super windy, or overly humid days are all trouble. Wind can blow dust into wet paint, and too much moisture can leave it patchy. Mid-morning to mid-afternoon usually works best.

Q4: What kind of paint should you use?

Kent: It depends on the surface and your location. Coastal homes should have premium-quality exterior paint that can handle sun, wind, and salty air. Wood benefits from flexible coatings to handle expansion and contraction, and metal? Always use a rust-preventing primer first.

Cheap paint might save a few bucks upfront, but you’ll pay for it with headaches down the road.

If you don’t choose wisely, you might end up spending again much sooner than if you’d invested in quality.

I’m not telling you to buy the most expensive paint brand because there are budget-friendly options out there. Just do a little research first.

For specialised or problematic paint applications, OCA will be happy to refer you to a paint specialist. They might need to mix a bespoke product, especially in coastal environments.

Q5: Can I save time by skipping preparation if everything looks ok?

Kent: Short answer is: no! Prep is just as important as the paint itself. Clean walls, remove flaking paint, fill cracks, and ensure plaster or masonry is fully dry. A proper primer helps the paint stick and last longer.

Skip the preparation step, and you may as well be rolling the dice with your new paint.

Q6: How do I know if my walls are ready to begin painting?

Kent: Look for damp spots, cracks, or peeling paint. Wipe your hand across a section of the wall. Chalky residue is a sign that it needs cleaning or priming. And if you’ve plastered recently, give it time to dry.

Rushing is a shortcut to frustration, and nobody likes scrubbing off flaking paint.

Q7: Does living near the coast change things?

Kent: Definitely. Salt, strong sunlight, and wind can wear paint down faster. Using high-quality, coastal-grade exterior paint and keeping up with touch-ups makes a real difference.

Think of it as giving your home a little armour against the elements.

Q8: Can I tackle the painting myself, or is it smarter to use a contractor?

Kent: That depends on your time, skills, and patience. DIY can save money, but painting well takes preparation, technique, and endurance, especially on large or tricky surfaces.

Doing one or two walls yourself is manageable, but painting an entire house is a different matter. Hiring a professional can save you a lot of stress and ensure a long-lasting finish.

At OCA, our project management service can even include the painting stage, coordinating contractors, and handling timing and quality control, so homeowners get the best results without the hassle. Call me. I will sort out the logistics for you!

Q9: Any final advice for homeowners planning to repaint?

Kent: The best advice I can give? Proper planning! Watch the weather! Don’t skimp on preparation! Use the best quality you can afford.

Whether you tackle it yourself or bring in a contractor, a little care goes a long way. The right timing, prep, and paint mean your home will look great and stand strong for years.
