FRANSKRAAL BOWLING CLUB TOURNAMENT

Gansbaai Courant

18 Trips teams all converged on the Franskraal Bowling Club consisting of 6 teams from Bonnievale, 2 teams from Kleinmond and 10 teams of our very own local bowlers.

Tea or coffee as well as a selection of breads, spreads and cheese awaited everyone immediately after registration upon arrival at the club.
President Pieter Conradie welcomed everyone with a special mention to the 6 visiting teams from Bonnievale and the 2 visiting teams from Kleinmond. He asked everyone to stand for a moment of silence for the recent passing of Hennie Lourens, a long-standing member and an ex-president of the club. Pieter then introduced Mattie Neethling, our vice-president, the official Umpire for the day, to lead us all in prayer. He then introduced Jan Fouche, the Match Secretary to explain the format for the day’s play, as follows:-
3 games of 13 ends each with 4 points for a win and 1 point per end won for a total of 17 points per game. The first 2 games were drawn already and the 3rd and final game would be played using strength against strength. 1 trial end per game and 1 burnt end per team per game with the white being re-spotted on the 2 meter mark thereafter.

Play began on both greens East – West then everyone returned to the clubhouse for tea or coffee and sandwiches followed by their second games.
Lunch and a pre-ordered drink from the bar followed with a hot-dog roll and relish followed by a jelly pudding with custard. Mattie spun the wheel and Kobus Le Roux from Bonnievale was the lucky winner. The greens were turned North – South during the lunch interval as Jan and Una Conradie adjudicated the scorecards for the final games using the strength against strength format for play for the final set of games.
On completion of the day’s play everyone returned to the clubhouse for a well earned thirst quencher as Mattie again spun the wheel and Kristo Jooste, our Treasurer was the recipient.

President Pieter then thanked everyone for their participation with a special thanks to the sponsors Thornburn Security who also sponsored the “Sheep on a Spit” braai to follow, after the prize giving. He thanked Annie Smit for the lovely flower arrangement and for her son’s continued participation and sponsorship with the club. He again thanked Bonnievale and Kleinmond for their participation and support. He thanked all the ladies in the kitchen including Linda, Annie, Dalena, Issie & Liz. He thanked his wife Una for her continued support and assistance with admin duties for the hampers, as well as for her adjudication together with Jan. The draw followed for the hamper and was won by one of the Bonnievale players with a second prize hamper going to President Pieter.

Draw cards followed for all of those not in the prizes and were drawn as follows:-
Skip - Mel Knox. Second - Charlie Nowers. And Lead - Sip Groenewald.
The prize giving followed and the award for the team that tried the hardest but had the longest day was awarded to Franskraal and skip Alan Lowenthal and his team of Dina & Leni
In third place with 33 +7 ~ Franskraal with skip Gideon Pie-naar and his team of Liz & Marie
In second place with 33 +19 ~ Bonnievale with skip Wictor Herbert and his team
And winners with 37 +23 ~ Bonnievale with skip Kobus Le Roux and his team
Kobus made a brief speech and thanked his team. He mentioned the strong contingent of 6 teams from Bonnievale and said he was told that they had an A team, a B team, even a C team but that he was just a team. Well done Kobus and congratulations! President Pieter closed the prize giving and everyone participated in the “Sheep on a Spit” braai with salads and garlic bread. Winning skip Kobus even bought us all a drink to celebrate his winnings on the green as well as on the wheel.
