An avid sportsman, who excels in rugby at Hermanus High School is also a very enthusiastic soccer follower. André-Pierre (Spike)(16) and his father, André Gouws, therefore decided two weeks ago to go and watch a game of soccer at the Afro Turf pitch at the Gansbaai Community Sports Grounds. The Power Line Football Club was in action and Spike asked his father: “Dad, do you think they will allow me to play for them.” André said: “We can only ask” and approached coach, Derrick Mvilapa. Derrick invited him to register Spike. He had to give the coach a copy of his ID and a R40 fee for registration. He also asked for André’s cellphone number. The next Saturday André got a surprise phone call from the coach. “I want your son to play as striker for my team tomorrow.” André immediately went down to the New Harbour where Derrick is employed as a security guard. He registered Spike as a member of Power Line FC. On Spike’s arrival at the soccer field on Sunday he was warmly welcomed by his new team mates and played a very enjoyable game. Spike is looking forward to be a regular in the team for the rest of the season.

Coach Derrick said on Monday that he played Spike on Sunday to appraise his talent. “I was very pleased with what I saw. It was his first opportunity to play in a soccer match and he showed lots of talent and ability. It will be a pleasure to coach him.”
