What is Oak Wood?

Oak is a shrub or tree that is native to the Northern Hemisphere. It is in the Genus Quercus of the beech family, Fagaceae. They are both deciduous (shedding their leaves annually) and evergreen (retain foliage throughout the year)

Oak is a hardwood type of nearly 600 different species. In North America you will find around 90 species. These trees grow for up to 150 years before being utilized for construction.

Properties and Qualities

Today we mostly use oak for flooring, wine barrels, and boats, including many other uses, but it is one of the world's most valued woods in furniture and cabinetry making. Its workability, durability, and natural aesthetics make it a greatly desired wood.

White oak has somewhat more water resistance, thus dominantly used for thousands of years in making wine barrels, floors, and boats. The fact that it has such a dense constitution and long-living nature makes it relatively resistant to fungal attacks.

Appearance

Oak wood's durability and beautiful prominent grain appearance place it in high demand. When natural oil is applied, the contrasts in the wood make it shine, leaving behind an appealing natural feel. Even though Oak is a hardwood it can be smoothed to a super smooth fine finish.

Maintenance

Maintaining oak products is essential to prolong their durability and attractiveness. Frequently oil with Woodoc Furniture oil or food-safe mineral oil.

We ensure that our oak is sustainably sourced and will continue making hundreds of beautiful products.
