Igniting the Spirit of Endurance
“The Trans Enduro is a remarkable event with a longstanding tradition in the South African Military, dating back to the early 1980s - it is not just a race; it’s an endurance challenge like no other,” Overstrand’s Deputy Executive Mayor, Alderman Lindile Ntsabo said during his message to welcome the military’s Trans Enduro teams in Hermanus on Friday, 6 December 2024. “Along the way, you run, cycle, and sail - pushing yourselves physically and mentally in a true test of strength and resilience.” He added that it is more than just competition - it is about building leadership, learning responsibility, and understanding the importance of community service. The opening speaker, Lt Steenkamp based his message on: “Setting the Stage for Impact”.
“This remarkable initiative began in 1982 as a daring adventure race, where a small group of academy students journeyed along the coast from Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) to Saldanha Bay using 2 inflatable boats,” Lt Damons, Exercise Trans Enduro Commander, said. “What started as a test of endurance and teamwork has evolved into a cornerstone of our Academy’s values, blending rigorous physical training with community service and leadership development.”
Along the journey, the students visit towns and communities, engaging in outreach activities that are part of their Masiza community outreach programme. These efforts, driven by the motto “Touching Lives”, make a tangible difference in the lives of those in need, whether through maintaining schools, supporting senior citizens, or simply spreading hope.
The teams were then introduced by Lt Damons: *The Masiza Team; *The Sea Team; *The Running Team; *The Cycling Team; *The Land Team; *The Media Team; *The Logistics (Log) Team; *The Signals Team; *The Kasswors Team - Refreshments (was not present in Hermanus); *The Transport Team.
Together, these teams embody the essence of Exercise Trans Enduro: endurance, leadership, and service. Their hard work and dedication not only make this event a success but also leave a lasting legacy in the communities they touch. “Let us celebrate the efforts of these remarkable teams and the values they uphold through Exercise Trans Enduro,” Lt Damons concluded.
