OM investigates fuel smell in Bbos Water
Overstrand Municipality’s maintenance teams repaired a water pipe breakage in Baardskeerdersbos on the evening of 13 February 2025 and detected the presence of a diesel/petrol smell at the site. Complaints were also received from nearby residents, reporting a strong fuel odour in the water at some houses.
The damaged pipe was successfully repaired, and the water network was flushed to remove any potentially harmful particles from the system.
The Municipality conducted an investigation at the site and will inform the Department of Environmental Affairs regarding the potential contamination of the network.
Communication with the owner of the fuel station will be done as part of the ongoing investigation.
Water samples were collected from various locations and will be sent to an accredited laboratory for analysis to detect any harmful contaminants.
The municipality advises that the water should not be used for human consumption until further notice.
