Learning About African Penguins at Laerskool Gansbaai
On 18 February 2025, Laerskool Gansbaai hosted an expo on African penguins as part of an environmental education program. The WCC schools’ education team introduced Grade 5 and 6 learners to the challenges these endangered seabirds face and why conservation efforts are so important.
The learners explored topics like why penguin numbers are declining, how overfishing and climate change affect their survival, and what is being done to protect them. They also had the chance to examine penguin eggshells and feathers, making the learning experience more hands-on.
Discussions included adaptations that help penguins survive in their environment, the importance of marine protected areas, and practical ways people can help, from beach clean-ups to reducing oil spills.
Thank you to the AVI Community Trust for supporting this program.
