New Discovery by the Grootbos Entomology Team!
We’re excited to share that our entomology team has confirmed a new record for our pinned insect collection!
During a recent BioBlitz, a rare hoverfly - Paramixogaster acantholepidis - was collected. Hoverflies are important (and often overlooked) pollinators, playing a key role in our ecosystem.
This particular species is myrmecophilous, meaning its larvae grow up inside ants' nests - in this case, those of the Lepisiota capensis, the small black sugar ant, which is common in our landscape.
