Meet the Wildlife of Grootbos

Bushbuck (Tragelaphus sylvaticus)

Grootbos is home to the most western distribution of bushbuck. The name comes from tragus, meaning goat and sylvaticus, meaning “of the forest.”

Our bushbuck males are almost jet black, a striking contrast to the lighter brown males found elsewhere in Africa. This elegant male struts proudly, showing off his beautiful markings on the reserve.

Cape Grysbok

This is an adult male Cape grysbok, one of the special, shy creatures you may be lucky enough to spot. They are often seen in the firebreaks on the reserve, keeping an eye out before disappearing into the fynbos.

Bushbuck Pair

A pair of bushbuck silhouetted against the mountainside, a peaceful reminder of the wild beauty we are working to protect at Grootbos.
