10-Second Test Before Repainting Your Exterior Wall
Before you start painting, try this simple test on the sunniest side of your house.
Rub your palm firmly across the wall, then take a look at your hand.
If it comes away with a white or coloured powder, your wall is chalking. This happens when sunlight breaks down the old paint film, leaving loose pigment on the surface.
Why does it matter? Because paint cannot properly grip a powdery surface. If you paint straight over it, your new coat is only as strong as the chalky layer underneath, and that can lead to peeling and a paint job that doesn't last.
How to fix it properly:
• Wire brush or scrub away the loose chalk
• Wash the wall thoroughly and allow it to dry completely
• Seal the surface with Prominent Paints Neuklad Alkali Resistant Sealer to bind the surface
• Then apply your top coats
That extra preparation step can make all the difference when it comes to getting a durable, long-lasting finish.
