Flower Valley’s Early Learning Centre has become the first school in the Overberg to receive the Eco-Schools Diamond Decade Award. The award celebrates 10 years of environmental education, as per the Eco-Schools curriculum, and is presented by the Wildlife and Environment Society of SA (Wessa).

The international Eco-Schools programme supports environmental learning in the classroom. The programme is implemented in 62 countries worldwide, and aims to make young children environmentally-conscious and sustainably-minded.

According  to the Wessa Eco-Schools team, the Flower Valley centre, based on Flower Valley Farm outside Gansbaai, is providing young children passing through the centre “a good and sound environmental ethic”.

The centre was praised for its well-stocked vegetable garden, medicinal plants section, water-wise garden and scented garden.

“This must bring great joy to all  at school and to your visitors.” The centre teaches youngsters how  to plant their own gardens,  compost, recycle, up cycle and about sustainable water use, among other themes.

Flower Valley’s centre provides a holistic education to children aged two to six, including a Grade R class. Twenty-seven children currently attend the centre.

But Flower Valley’s role in Early Childhood Development (ECD) stretches beyond the borders of Flower Valley Farm. The Trust also co-ordinates an ECD Programme across the Strandveld region, supporting five ECD centres and a home-based care programme.
