Fishing around Gansbaai with Oubaas Lesch - Eco-friendly Fisherman

Oubaas’s advice on how to be an eco-friendly fisherman and doing it the right way.

Get your Permit

Make sure you have your valid fishing permit on you at all times and stick to the stipulated seasons, zones, species, size and bag limits as set out by The Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. Also remember, be it bait collection, rod-and-reel fishing, boat fishing or spearfishing, no recreational permit holder is allowed to sell any part of their catch.

Brush up on your Technique

Take the time to learn how to properly catch-and-release a fish without harming it if you don’t intend eating it.

Drive Carefully

Your 4x4 might have the power to do all sorts of amazing things but is worthless if it is used to harm nature or spoil the fishing experience for others. Only drive on demarcated roads and tracks and be aware of your travelling speed, the intertidal zone and fauna and flora that shouldn’t end up under your wheels.

Keep it Clean

A conscientious fisherman will bring an extra bag to take their broken fishing tackle, plastic, cardboard bait boxes and refreshment bottles home. Spend a few minutes adding any other garbage you might see. Not only are you doing your bit for the planet when you pick up litter, you are setting a good example for anyone else who is out on the beach.

Drink Responsibly

Many fishermen enjoy an ice-cold beer to quench their thirst on a hot day or a sip of sherry to warm up the soul and ward off the winter chill. Whichever you decide on, drinking responsibly is key. Take other fishermen and beachgoers into consideration by not getting rowdy and remember to take your empties home with you. Not driving under the influence is also an important point to consider if you are enjoying a “Knertsie” at your favourite spot!
