Exciting School Holiday Activities at Grootbos Foundation

Our school holiday programme kicked off last week on Monday with a week full of special activities. A drumming workshop was a real treat, facilitated by visiting drummers who use a djembe drum circle to celebrate rhythm, song, and African cultures through a magical cacophony that quickly turns into shared order and beauty. What a great way to use the arts as a fun activity to attract youth to a safe environment during their holidays.

When the weather is blustery and wintry in Gansbaai, we are so grateful to be able to fit large groups of youths into our indoor Spaces4All building so that the community knows there is always a safe place for their children. Here, the coaches of Grootbos Foundation offer activities, mentorship, and a meal, no matter what the weather. Our holiday programme takes place every weekday throughout the school holiday.

On a winter morning, warm-ups and activity stations with our Junior Coaches is how the holiday programme begins. Arts and games are fun activities for children during their holiday, keeping them active, engaged, and mentally stimulated.

The intention behind building the beautiful Grootbos Florilegium botanical art collection and making it accessible to visitors through guided gallery tours is to generate funds for the ongoing conservation work of Grootbos Foundation and to develop cultural arts activities for children. By drawing attention to the beauty of fynbos through botanical art illustrations, we can drive support and interest in fynbos conservation and community upliftment.

Creative activities and indigenous games are fun ways to celebrate the cultural values in our communities and attract children into the safe spaces held by Grootbos community coaches. Being able to use both sport and cultural arts for development is a great way to reach more children in our surrounding communities.
