Rise of the Fynbos: Restoring the Overberg After the Fires
Grootbos Foundation and Walker Bay Fynbos Conservancy made the local news. Fynbos fightback after the flames. In response to the devastating 2025/26 fires in the Overberg, the Walker Bay Fynbos Conservancy has launched the ‘Rise of the Fynbos’ initiative. The initiative supports fire-affected communities dealing with invasive alien plants germinating across burnt landscapes. A dedicated website will help landowners record post-fire regrowth and share observations. Already, species are reappearing after nearly 40 years. Fire is essential for fynbos, but invasive plants can overwhelm recovery. A September launch will back teams clearing saplings, mostly women from local communities.
