Inspiring Young Conservationists
20 of Grootbos Foundation's Earth Rangers were invited by Dyer Island Conservation Trust and Cape Nature to participate in a Marine Protected Area day on 1 August. They spent a wonderful morning helping to clear litter from some of the Gansbaai coastline along with 100 other young children and they enjoyed lunch together. The Earth Rangers programme is a nature-based programme that is delivered by our sports coaches, aimed at getting young children to experience nature and develop love and curiosity about their natural heritage. 2 of our conservationists, Mike and Carly, spoke to the Grade 6 & 7 Career Day at Okkie Smuts in Stanford about their careers in conservation. From research science to nature guiding, reserve management to wildfire fighting, there are many ways to work and play a role within the local green economy. The best time to capture the imaginations of young children and possibly inspire their career direction is between the ages of 10-12 years.
