Walker Bay Fynbos Conservancy

Botanical Surveys

Botanical surveys are an active part of the work we do at the Walker Bay Fynbos Conservancy. One of our missions is to map the last remaining patches of critically endangered Elim ferricete fynbos in the Overberg area. Our vision is to link the Walker Bay area with the Cape Agulhas region. This area is classified as a conservation hotspot, with the high number of endemic species occurring here. In one of our latest outings, we captured this Endangered Erica regia in full bloom. This beautiful erica is known as the Elim heath and only occurs between Elim and Viljoenshof in lowland ferricrete areas. This species is under threat due to habitat fragmentation as well as threat by alien invasive species.
