About Blue
Art created almost entirely, from unaltered beach plastic, found on local beaches from de Plaat to Quoin Point.
'Living beside the sea it is hard to ignore the awfulness of plastic pollution. It's relentlessness. As long as the waves roll in, so will the plastic. This unsolicited companionship.’
Artist Blue de Gersigny's creative vision has always been closely tied to her love for the environment. For years, she has been captivated by the beauty of the local beaches around her, and her artwork is a reflection of this deep-seated appreciation.
However, her artistic passion has taken on an increasingly environmentally conscious angle in recent years, as she has become acutely aware of the critical need to preserve and protect our planet's natural resources.
With a diverse background in graphic design, textile design, and industrial design, Blue brings a unique perspective to her artistic practice. Although she has always worked in creative fields, it is worth noting that she is a self-taught artist, lacking a formal degree in art. This absence of traditional training has not hindered her creative exploration; instead, it has fostered a spirit of experimentation and uninhibited artistic expression in her work. Blue's journey as an artist is a testament to the boundless possibilities of self-discovery and the transformative power of pursuing one's passion with unwavering dedication.
The sight of plastic litter scattered across the beach compelled her to take action endeavouring to restore the area to its original pristine state. Being a resident of Kleinbaai and frequently taking walks along the shoreline, she found it impossible to ignore the pervasive single-use plastic waste. In response, she made the decision to collect it and transform it into something artistic and meaningful.
In her work, she seeks to inspire a sense of environmental stewardship and promote greater awareness of the impact that our actions have on the natural world. By using plastic waste and incorporating it into her artistic process, she is committed to creating work that is environmentally responsible as it is beautiful and thought-provoking.
Blue’s art is a testament to the beauty and fragility of our planet, and a call to action to protect and preserve it for generations to come. Her creative process involves meticulously sorting the discarded plastic by colour, shape, and size, and then skillfully weaving them into intricate designs and sculptures. Through her work, Blue seeks to raise awareness about the dangers of plastic waste and inspire others to take action in their own communities to protect our planet's precious resources.
