Kayaking in and around Gansbaai
To watch fish, seals and rare bird species duck and dive around you from the relative vantage point of a kayak, is a riveting experience.
Visitors to Gansbaai who want an extreme outdoor adventure can embark on exciting guided kayaking trips in spectacular river and sea surroundings. The rich bird and marine life along the Gansbaai coastline will ensure some close-up views of at least a few of our rare coastal birds and abundant fish and Cape Fur seals. Spotting a few dolphins at play is an ultimate highlight! Between July and December, rowers might even encounter a Southern Right Whale or two.
Rowers can choose between two thrilling experiences in double kayaks - a relaxing river cruise down the Klein River in Stanford, or a more adventurous sea trip along the pristine Gansbaai coastline. The sea trip has two routes - from the Gansbaai harbour to the scenic Stanford's Beach; or from Stanford's Beach to Die Plaat - a 17 km stretch of white sand beach in the Walker Bay Nature Reserve.
All the trips last 2-3 hours and promise to be an exhilarating eco-adventure. The picturesque town of Stanford is a popular tourist hotspot boasting a treasure-chest of artistic, cultural and historical assets.
The Klein River is renowned for its scenic beauty and magnificent array of rare bird species unique to this area. The trips are safe for rowers of all ages and levels of experience - even complete novices who have never held an oar in their hands! An experienced guide accompanies rowers on the excursions and informs them about the diverse landscapes, creatures and features along the route.
The sea trips might require a little more skill, experience and muscle power - especially when a light sea breeze causes ripples on the water's surface! Come and see, smell and taste the rich kelp that flourishes in this area and meet our distinct marine and bird species. The sea trips are weather permitted and restricted to days when the sea is calm. Both Stanford's Bay and De Plaat offer idyllic settings for swimming, hiking or a day of leisure at the beach.
Life jackets and water are supplied.
Bring your camera, binocular and comfortable clothes for a magic day of rowing in a spectacular environment of supreme natural beauty!
