If you take the N2 National Road directions to Caledon, you are welcomed to this agriculturally rich town by the mesmerizing sight of giant wind turbines that tower gracefully over rolling patchwork blankets of grain fields. Come late winter, early spring, most of this farming territory is anointed with vibrant yellow canola blossoms for as far as the eye can see.
Since the early days when Khoisan tribes roamed the area, Caledon’s seven iron-rich hot springs on the slopes of the Swartberg, have been a drawcard for visitors seeking relaxation and natural therapies. Other historical facts about Caledon are that it is the official capital of the Overberg as well as the seventh oldest town in South Africa. A visit to the local museum will make for an interesting way to while away a couple of hours and to find out about the history of the people of Caledon.
Other than the hot springs which are also the location of the spa hotel, there are plenty of things to do in Caledon. You can hike through the Caledon Nature Reserve to experience the indigenous fynbos vegetation, trees and flowers, as well as the gorgeous mountain views of the Swartberg. The flower garden has an annual spring flower show during September when there is a kaleidoscope of indigenous wildflowers in magnificent bloom.
Wine farms play host to fruitful vineyards, farm stalls and restaurants in Caledon that are just waiting to be discovered on your explorations of the area.
