Is there anything worth more than peace and quiet?
We all live fast-paced lives, juggling career progress, extramural activities, playdates, on top of trying to eat healthy, sleeping enough, and drinking enough water. It’s maddening. And no surprise, really, that we all struggle with burnout. Luckily, we have found the cure…
Come spend a little time by the ocean. Come recharge at Calamari Self-catering Apartment.
This seaside spot is equally perfect for a family getaway during the school holidays as it is for a girl’s weekend away. The apartment has two beautifully furnished bedrooms, both with double beds for you to curl up on with a good book (or take an afternoon nap). Bed linen and towels are provided to make your stay even more stress-free. (But should you need to take care of a little laundry while you are here, a washing machine and a drying rack are provided.) Soak in the tub after a long day on the beach or pop in the shower to wash away the salty water after your swim, before settling down on the couch to watch a movie.
Summers by the seaside make for the best holiday memories.
Take in beautiful views from the patio while the steaks sizzle on the braai, and the children play in the garden. Only a hop, skip, and jump from the beach, you have the ocean on your doorstep and a quirky seaside town to explore in Gansbaai.
About the owners:
Magic happens when accommodation hosts truly understand the balance between creating a welcoming, home-away-from-home atmosphere for their guests, and disappearing behind the scenes to allow them to enjoy the peace undisturbed.
Leon and Margaret van der Merwe are this special kind of hosts.
Before settling down in the area permanently, they were tourists to the region also. This has granted them the unique perspective of a visitor who sees the town, the accommodation, and the beaches from a stranger’s point of view, but also from the point of view of a seasoned local who knows all the best spots.
“I was privileged to have visited the Cape year after year with my parents, since I was a young child. And the Cape grew on me every time we experienced its beauty,” says Leon. “It was while fishing with my father in the waters around Gansbaai at the tender age of 11 years old that I fell in love with the Overberg’s beauty.”
The dream of living in the area permanently finally became a reality when the couple built their beautiful home in 2003, revelling in the splendour of being far enough away from the hustle and bustle and only a hundred metres from the ocean. (While still being only a 2-hour drive from Cape Town, should they need to venture into the city.) Realising how much guests to their home loved the area, they felt a responsibility to share this “quiet jewel” of a town (as they like to call De Kelders) with others. And so, in 2009, they turned their seaside home into world- class self-catering accommodation. Thanks to their generosity of spirit and warm hospitality visitors now get to enjoy seaside holidays to cherish forever.
Attractions:
De Kelders is perfectly situated to use as a base to explore some of the other Overberg towns and attractions. Hermanus and its famous Grotto Beach is a 40 min drive away, and picturesque Stanford only 15 minutes.

Beaches & Swimming
With a coastline to rival the most spectacular in the world, the aquamarine waters of De Kelders, Gansbaai and Franskraal will enchant you. Make sure to visit De Kelders beach, Blousloep beach, Die Plaat beach, Franskraal beach and a few of the others too. Some are sandy – perfect for sandcastles with the kids – and some are pebbly, and thus more suited to hours of leisurely snorkelling. When the weather is fine, pack a picnic basket and spend the day splashing about in the waves or working on your tan.
