10 Years of Saving African Penguins

A Decade of Feathers!

Yesterday, we celebrated 10 years of dedication to the African Penguin & Seabird Sanctuary (APSS)!

What started as a dream in Wilfred Chivell’s notebook has grown into a powerful force for conservation, rehabilitation, and awareness. Since opening in 2015, APSS has rehabilitated and released 1,205 African penguins, playing a crucial role in stabilizing the population on Dyer Island.

Through the years, we’ve worked with passionate penguin advocates, corporate donors, volunteers, and partners like Marine Dynamics to protect these incredible birds. From artificial penguin nests to habitat restoration, we’re committed to securing their future.

The fight isn’t over, but every penguin saved is a step toward recovery. #EveryPenguinCounts

Join us in reflecting on this milestone and help us continue rebuilding the African penguin population. Visit our blog to learn more!
