NEWS: Lighthouse Fever
After months of training and “patient” anticipation, the week has finally arrived. Kicking off the Gansbaai Sport Events calendar and the month of February all at the same time, this weekend is dedicated to the annual Lighthouse to Lighthouse Mountain Bike Race.

Taking place on the 8th and 9th of February 2014, the Lighthouse to Lighthouse MTB meanders along beautiful untouched stretches of the Gansbaai coastline. Starting off at Danger Point close to where the HMS Birkenhead floundered, the route follows old ox wagon trails and gravel roads leading to the L’Agulhas Lighthouse. The route takes you through fields of Fynbos, privately owned property and along the spectacular coastline known for its various shipwrecks.

This treacherous stretch of coast determined the building of these two well-known and steadfast buildings that still shine as brightly as it did when first lit. The Danger Point Lighthouse was originally built in 1894 and stands at 18,3 m tall. The light can be seen for approximately 25 sea miles. As for the L’Agulhas Lighthouse, construction started on the 1st of April 1847 and was finally lit on March 1st 1849. The lighthouse stands at an impressive 27 m tall and after years of burning sheep fat, an electric light was finally installed in 1936. Both lighthouses stand as beacons of warning and commemoration to celebrate the countless lives lost on the rocky shores along the southern tip of Africa.
