Xolani Lawo from the African Penguin and Seabird Sanctuary was invited by Children’s Book Network to represent the sanctuary at a recent workshop.

One of the Dyer Island Conservation Trust’s main objectives is education, thus the opportunity to  reach  a group of eager learners was not to be missed.

Children’s Book Network (CBN) began early in 2012, the dream of founders Gçina Mhlophe, Lesley Beake and Sindiwe Magona.

Their purpose is to bring books to children and children to books - to make reading “cool”.

CBN works through community workshops planned with, by and for the children. “Our goal is to bring books to children and children to books by making reading fun and exciting as well as useful,” says Lesley.

Xolani said of the experience, “Yesterday was like going back to my roots. Talking to the children and telling them why I am saving the African penguin.”

Did you know that the African penguin is an endangered species!

Please visit the African Penguin and Seabird Sanctuary to learn more. Open 8am to 4pm every day. Feeding times 8h30am and 3pm.
