We are super excited for our second trail run as part of the Funky Fynbos Festival. Last year's event was a great success and we are very proud to have the continued support of sponsor Cape Mohair and Rockets. The weekend offers the opportunity to celebrate our unique floral heritage with a fynbos display, fynbos talks, fynbos harvesting and demonstrations. There will be local craft stalls and local food merchants - this is a country fair and the crafts will be authentic and from the area.

King of the Mountain Prize for first male and female runner to reach summit of Swartkransberg on Grootbos Nature Reserve (highest Point of the trail at 9km mark). R500 each for first male and female runner sponsored by Grootbos. To qualify runners must be first on the summit and complete the race.

The Funky Fynbos Iron Man and Iron Lady prize for the best combined time for the 41km Monster mountain bike race on the Saturday and the 30km King Protea Trail run will each win a night for two at the Five star Grootbos Nature Reserve worth R7000 sponsored by Grootbos.

Goodie bags for all pre-entries and medals for all finishers and lucky draw prizes for all participants.

30km King Protea Route - ENTER NOW

This is a toughie with three steep climbs and a total altitude gain of 1229m. After a relatively gentle start the first climb takes runners up the Baviaansfontein Valley and to the peak of Swartkransberg between the 5-9km marks. The first water table will be at Bodhi Khaya near the bottom of this climb at the 4.5km mark. The king of the Mountain prizes for first male and female runners will be decided at the summit of Swartkransberg at the 9km mark. The route then takes runners down and through the Steynsbos milkwood forest to the second water point at Fynbos Retreat at the 17km mark. From here it’s down to the Witvoetskloof forest and waterfall (beware of slippery bridges, steps and boardwalks) and then up the steep ascent of the second major climb of the run from the 19 to 21km mark up Grootberg. The route then descends quite steeply into Flower Valley through the Stinkhoutsbos Forest to the final water point at the 25km mark. There is a final sting in the tail as runners ascend the third climb of the day over Windheuwel and then down to the finish at De Uijlenes.

Running time: Top runners can expect to take around 140-160mins to complete the 30km route and back markers about 4.5 hours.

12km Silver Pincushion Route - ENTER NOW

This run is suitable for the novice-intermediate trail runners. The routes is by no means flat but it’s on farm roads, jeep tracks and a well-used hiking trail. The first five kilometres provides a relatively easy, gentle warm up along the lower slopes of the Valley before a steep climb up the fynbos-clad slopes of Windheuwel. At the top you will realize that the climb was worth the effort with spectacular 3600 views across the Agulhas Plain towards the distant Cape Agulhas at the southern tip of Africa, as well as beautiful views of Dyer Island and the South Atlantic Ocean. The route then drops down along beautiful flower picking tracks to the lower eastern slopes of Windheuwel and then through the award winning vineyards of Lomond Wine Estate. The last section of trail follows a single track across the Uilenkraal River and back to the start/finish at De Uijlenes.

6km Platbos Route - ENTER NOW

The 6km route while relatively short is a real treat. It takes runners or walkers through the ancient Platbos Forest – the southernmost forest in Africa. After a short section along the farm road from the start at De Uijlenes the trail turns left up into Platbos Forest. While there is a steady climb just before the middle of the route, this circular trail is ideal for families and children. After a gentle meander through the beautiful forest vegetation, the trail winds back down to the start/finish at De Uijlenes.

We are proud to have MHR Rockets on board as our primary sponsor and thank them for their generous contributions including start and finish arches, branded T-shirts for our marshalls and organisers, ice baths, masseurs, goodie bags for the athletes. They will also have a retail shop on - site selling their range of compression sports gear, mohair socks and more. Please support them, without whom much of our sporting events would not be possible at the scale we have them.
