On the 15th of February a group of tourists from Belgium visited Gansbaai and more especially Masakhane.
One of the group, Christ Vleugels and a few of his friends had visited in 2011 and after seeing the need in various spheres in Masakhane they donated toys and clothes to the children.
They also made a cash donation to the tour guide to assist her in her endeavours to make a difference in the community.
Chris has kept in contact with Glenda at the Tourism Bureau and when he and a group of friends came out to South Africa again last week they made sure to include a visit to Gansbaai in their itinerary.
This time they brought some sports clothes, children’s clothes and stationary.
They were taken on a tour of Masakhane accompanied by the area manager, tourism officials as well as Ward Committee members.
They visited the Early Learning Centres and other interesting places as arranged by the new tour guide Ally Msweli in conjunction with the tourism staff.
They were entertained by the people of Masakhane and a supper was arranged for them at the Sports Centre where they were enthralled by the Marimba band from Academia as well as the “Klopse”-dancers from Blompark.
A special gift was handed to Mr Myburgh and the deputy mayor Alderman Dudley Coetzee at the dinner.
They departed after a good nights sleep in one of our local Bed and Breakfasts with a promise of further support.
A group member, Dr Boeckx, was voted the best doctor in Belgium and he has indicated that he will be donating some of the prize-money to projects in the Masakhane community. Chris informed the group that at their next wine-tasting gathe-ring a collection would be taken and monies forwarded towards the various projects.
