Why You Don’t Have to Say Yes to Everyone
Always saying YES does not buy you worth.
Too often, we measure our worth by what we can do for the people in our lives.
We become the person who is always available. The one who says yes. The one who takes care of things, solves problems, carries the load and makes sure everyone else is okay.
But there is a difference between doing something because you genuinely love someone and doing everything because, somewhere inside, you fear that you are not good enough.
And the more we do, the more people can come to expect from us - because we have shown them just how capable we are.
There is an uncomfortable truth in this:
We teach people how to treat us.
That doesn't mean we are responsible for another person's behaviour. It means that the boundaries we set, the expectations we accept and the way we value ourselves all contribute to the relationship we create with others.
Of course, we want to spoil the people we love. We want to help. We want to give. We want the people around us to know that they matter.
But where are you in that equation?
Self-worth has to begin with you.
Imagine stepping outside yourself for a moment and looking at the person that is you.
What would you think of her?
What would you say to her?
Would you tell her that she has to keep carrying everything?
Would you tell her to keep proving herself?
Or would you gently tell her:
“Some of this burden belongs to someone else. You don't have to carry it all.”
So, what does self-worth mean to you?
Not what someone else tells you it should mean.
What does it mean for you?
And more importantly - are you actually living from it?
Because before you can stand firmly in your worth, you first have to know what you want.
What would change if you no longer felt compelled to earn your place through what you do for everyone else?
How would you feel if you could know, without having to constantly prove it, that what you bring is enough?
What would your relationships look like?
What would your life look like?
And who would you become when saying YES is a choice made from love rather than a desperate attempt to feel worthy?
Self-worth is something you own.
You don't have to earn it by doing more.
You don't have to buy it with your time, your energy or your sacrifice.
You begin by recognising that you are already worthy - and then learning to live accordingly.
