The much needed rain has arrived, bringing welcome drought relief throughout the Western Cape.

The South African Weather Service says downpours will continue for some time and temperatures are expected to drop significantly.

 “Rain not only reduces visibility, but also the amount of grip on your tyres,” says Senior Superintendent: Traffic Services Xen Titus. “So it is important to use common sense when driving during foul weather and increase stopping distances,” he added.

“Please make sure all headlights, taillights, brake lights and turn signals are functioning properly so other drivers will see you during downpours," he requested.

One of the simplest and most effective ways to stay safe while travelling is choosing to wear a seatbelt.

"Wearing a seatbelt can be the difference between life and death - for drivers and passengers," Titus says.

Staying safe on the road

  • Keep headlights on during inclement weather regardless of the time of day;
  • Slow down;
  • Allow more time for travel;
  • Keep greater distances between cars;
  • Have a safety kit in car, including blanket and shovel;
  • 4-wheel drive means you can drive  faster  but  you  won’t be able to stop faster - and having to stop suddenly can make you skid in wet weather;
  • Always clean your car of fog or ice;
  • Use common sense when deciding to travel during foul weather;
  • Always wear your seatbelt.
