The Mammal Research Institute Whale Unit conducted their first aerial survey on Monday between Witsand and Hawston. Residents of the greater Gansbaai spotted the gyrocopter in the area. The pilot was Jean Tresfon.
They counted 237 Southern Right Whales of which 64 are calves. The team look forward to seeing how numbers increase by next month’s survey.
