The first recycling swop shop was held in Eluxolweni on the afternoon of 21 July, 2017.

The swop shop concept, which originated in Hermanus several years ago, has become a very popular initiative in the Overstrand and beyond to teach children to collect recyclable materials, which they can exchange for tokens with which they can then buy stationary supplies, personal hygiene items and even some toys and clothes.

The swop shop in Eluxolweni was organized by the Pearly Beach Conservancy. Several local people and a few of the Conservancy committee members lent a helping hand. The supplies were donated in kind by residents and people from out of town.

About 50 children collected two big “bakkie” loads of recyclables and then used their tokens to shop for their goodies.

Kat Myburgh, Municipal Manager, and Johan van Taak, Solid Waste Manager, took time from their busy work schedules to attend the meeting.

The Pearly Beach Conservancy would like to thank everyone who participated in the event - from the children who collected the rubbish to the helpers and the sponsors and the Municipality for their support.

The plan is to hold a swop shop meeting on a monthly basis for the time being. Anyone who would be interested in helping physically or with donations is welcome to call Pearly Beach Conservancy.
