HIV, TB and Nutrition
Today, we hosted a nutritional workshop to highlight the important role that good nutrition plays in supporting the health and well-being of people living with HIV and TB.
Throughout this month, we will be conducting nutritional workshops in Masakhane, Blompark and Eluxolweni, sharing valuable information with our communities about healthy eating, balanced nutrition and practical ways to improve their daily diets.
As part of our initiative, we also distributed a variety of seedlings and seeds to interested community members, encouraging families to start growing their own vegetables at home. Along with the seedlings, we provided nutritional advice to help community members make informed choices about their health.
Why are spinach and kale so important?
Spinach and kale are nutrient-rich leafy green vegetables that can be a valuable addition to a healthy, balanced diet, especially for people living with HIV or TB.
• Spinach provides folate, vitamin C, vitamin K and other nutrients that support normal body functions and overall health.
• Kale contains vitamins A, C and K, as well as antioxidants that help protect the body's cells.
• A balanced diet provides energy, protein, vitamins and minerals that help the body function properly, maintain strength and support recovery during illness.
• For people living with HIV and TB, good nutrition is especially important because illness can increase nutritional needs, while symptoms such as poor appetite may make it difficult to eat enough.
• Growing your own vegetables can also help households access fresh, nutritious food more affordably and encourage healthier eating habits.
We believe that empowering communities starts with knowledge, practical support and giving people the tools to take better care of themselves and their families. Sometimes, a few seeds planted today can grow into a healthier tomorrow.
