Youth Development Through Sport and Education

From the sports desk where coaches use various sports as tools to develop young people's full potential as positive, engaged, dedicated, healthy, disciplined team players: the Under 16 Female Rugby team participated in a rugby tournament in Genadendal, where they played 3 matches. Their team spirit, strategising, and adapting on the field impressed their coaches; their respect and camaraderie impressed the organisers, who promptly invited them to play again in a different tournament next year.

Between school time and the evening, the best and safest place for young people to choose to hang out is at the sports field, where they find friends, responsible, trained adult coaches and a fun, organised sports activity like this soccer practice this week. Choosing to engage in sports or to go to the Masakhane Hub to work on homework are good options for young people. Positive life choices keep young people safe, healthy and hopeful about their future.

When not on the sports field in the afternoons, schoolchildren are able to attend the afternoon programme at the Masakhane Hub, where they find a safe place and a meal with homework support, and access to the internet and computers. They are able to work on their individual school projects or prepare for school tests.
