Gansbaai received municipality status in 1963 and now has a municipal system with various divisions, an award-winning tourism bureau, a public library, various schools, a community sports stadium, banks, petrol stations and churches of different denominations. The town also has doctors, dentists and a government clinic to take care of the health needs of the community.

Generations of fishermen have ensured small and large-scale commercial fishing remains an important part of Gansbaai’s economy. Two working harbours share a fish processing plant that has fishmeal and canning divisions, employing hundreds of local townsfolk.
